What to Do in Lo Stagnone When There Is No Wind? 11 Best Ideas for Your Kitesurfing Holidays
I admit that when I first started my adventure with Lo Stagnone, days without wind seemed like a waste to me. After all, we mainly come here for kitesurfing.
Over time, however, I discovered that no wind is often the best opportunity to get to know the real Sicily. Because although the lagoon attracts people from all over the world, there are plenty of places hidden around it that are worth seeing.
If the forecast for the day isn’t looking good, here are a few proven ideas.
1. Get lost in the streets of Marsala
Marsala is located just over a dozen minutes from Lo Stagnone and is one of those cities best discovered without a plan. Just park the car and set off. Along the way, you will find atmospheric squares, small cafes, family restaurants, and shops run by the locals.
2. Visit medieval Erice
If I had to point out one place that you must see during your stay in western Sicily, it would be Erice. Located at the top of a mountain, the town looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale. Stone streets, views of the sea, and the atmosphere make time slow down.
3. See the famous salt pans
The salt pans are one of the symbols of western Sicily. White mounds of salt, historic windmills, and shallow pools create a landscape you won’t find anywhere else.
4. Sail to the island of Mozia
In the middle of the lagoon lies the small island of Mozia. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Sicily. Even if you aren’t a history buff, the boat trip and the walk around the island are a very interesting experience.
5. Try authentic Sicilian arancini
There is no better time for culinary discoveries than a no-wind day. Arancini, which are fried rice balls with various fillings, are one of the symbols of Sicilian cuisine.
6. Visit a local vineyard
Marsala is famous for producing wine known all over the world. There are many family-run vineyards in the area that offer tastings and tours.
7. Look for the most beautiful beach
Although Lo Stagnone is mainly associated with the lagoon, you will also find beautiful beaches in the area. Some are wide and sandy, others are more wild.
8. Go to Trapani
Trapani often remains in the shadow of more famous Sicilian cities, which is a shame. The port, the old town, the promenade, and great restaurants make it a place where you can spend a truly pleasant day.
9. Organize a trip to Mount Etna
Yes, it’s a bit of a drive from Lo Stagnone to Etna. But if you have a day without wind and you’re up for a bigger adventure, it’s worth considering such an expedition.
10. A trip to the Aegadian Islands – Favignana
Favignana is a true pearl of the Mediterranean. If there’s no wind, it’s the perfect time for a heavenly trip!
- Option 1 (Budget-friendly): You take a classic ferry and rent a bike on the island.
- Option 2 (Our favorite!): You choose an organized boat trip.
11. Do nothing
Summary: No-wind days are part of the Sicilian adventure
The lack of wind in the forecast doesn’t mean boredom at all. Use this time to catch your breath in true dolce vita style and let yourself be surprised by the island atmosphere!
Ciao, it’s Marti 👋
